Tree Trimming Before Hurricane Season: What Actually Matters

In South Florida, tree trimming is storm protection first and aesthetics second. A dense, unthinned canopy catches wind like a sail, and that load is exactly what snaps trunks and drops limbs onto roofs.

Thin the canopy — do not top the tree

Proper storm-prep pruning opens the interior of the canopy so wind can pass through instead of pushing against a solid wall of foliage. It removes deadwood, crossing branches and weak attachments while keeping the tree's natural shape intact.

Topping — cutting main limbs back to stubs — does the opposite. The tree responds with a flush of fast, weakly attached water sprouts that are far more likely to fail in the next storm than the branches that were removed.

Timing: finish by late May

Structural pruning is best done in late winter through early spring, before the season starts. Aim to have storm-prep work finished by the end of May. Dead, diseased or clearly hazardous limbs should be removed any time of year — those never wait.

Palms need a different approach

Palms are routinely over-pruned in Florida. Removing green fronds above the horizontal — the so-called hurricane cut — strips the palm of the food production it needs and actually weakens the crown against wind.

  • Remove only dead, brown or badly damaged fronds
  • Take off seed pods and loose boots that can become projectiles
  • Leave healthy green fronds growing above horizontal in place
  • Never spike-climb a palm you intend to keep — the wounds do not heal

What to check on your own property

  • Limbs overhanging the roof, screen enclosure, driveway or power drop
  • Dead branches with no leaves during the growing season
  • Cracks, cavities or mushrooms at the base of the trunk
  • Trees leaning noticeably more than they did last year
  • Roots lifting nearby pavers, walkways or the driveway slab

Any of those warrant a professional assessment. The cost of preventative trimming is a small fraction of a single storm-damage claim.
